Silk Cushion Nadir Afonso "Antropomorfismo"
Nadir Afonso was born on December 4, 1920 in Chaves and died on December 11, 2013.
He graduated in architecture at the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes in Porto and in 1946 he studied painting at the École de Beaux-Arts in Paris and obtained a scholarship from the French government through Portinari. In 1951 he collaborates with architects Le Corbusier and Fernand Léger, and from 1952 to 1954 he works in Brazil with architect Oscar Niemeyer. That same year he returned to Paris and resumed his interest in kinetic art, at which time he developed studies on painting, which he called "Espacillimité".
At the forefront of world art, he exhibits his work "Espacillimités" animated with movement at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in 1958.
In 1965, Nadir Afonso abandoned architecture for good. Aware of his social maladjustment, he isolated himself and dedicated his life to the creation of his work.
In October 2015, the Nadir Afonso Museum of Contemporary Art, a project by the architect Siza Vieira, was inaugurated.
