The Portuguese sidewalk or Portuguese mosaic is the established name of a certain type of floor covering used especially for paving sidewalks, public spaces, and private spaces, in general. This type of sidewalk is widely used in Portuguese-speaking countries.
The Portuguese sidewalk results from the calcetamento with irregularly shaped stones, usually in white and black limestone, which can be used to form decorative patterns or mosaics by the contrast between the stones of different colors. The most traditional colors are black and white, although brown and red, blue gray and yellow are also popular.
The Portuguese Traditional Flooring (calçada à portuguesa), as the name indicates, is originally from Portugal, having appeared as we know it in the middle of the 19th century. It is widely used in the paving of pedestrian areas, parks, squares, courtyards...
