SOFIA AREAL (Lisbon, 1960)


Sofia Areal is one of the most respected Portuguese artists today. She began her training in the UK completing Textile Design and the Foundation Courses at the Hertfordshire College of Art and Design in St. Albans. Back in Portugal she continues her studies in engraving and painting at the Ar.Co. art school workshops in Lisbon. She has participated in group exhibitions since 1982 and has solo exhibitions since 1990. During her over 30-year career she has, in addition to painting and drawing, also been active in the areas of illustration, graphic design and set design. More recently, in 2012, she illustrated the Colóquio Letras magazine, published by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; in 2013 she launches the book ”Creatividade / Creativity" with Professor Emeritus Allan Hobson of Harvard University, USA and has an exhibition in Mexico, and in 2014 an exhibition in China (Macau SAR).

Through this collaboration with Antiflop, the artist reopens with a novel eye her interest for textiles the activity with which she began her training as a visual artist.

Her works are represented in private collections and institutions in Portugal and abroad such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Serralves Foundation, the bank Caixa Nova, Galicia (Spain), the FEVAL Foundation (Caceres, Spain), The Museum of Contemporary Art of Funchal (Madeira island, Portugal), Casa da Cerca - Centre for Contemporary Art, Carmona and Costa Foundation, Millennium BCP, Novo Banco Collection, PLMJ Foundation, Dom Luis I Foundation - Cascais Cultural Centre, among many others.
