Nadir Afonso was born in Chaves in 1920.

He graduated in architecture at the School of Fine Arts of Porto.

In 1946, studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and obtained by Portinari a scholarship from the French government until 1948 and in 1951 collaborator of the architect Le Corbusier and poured himself some time the studio Fernand Léger.

From 1952 to 1954, he worked in Brazil with the architect Oscar Niemeyer.

That year, he returned to Paris, resuming contact with the artists oriented in search of kinetic art, developing studies on painting called "Espacillimité".

At the forefront of the art world, exposes in 1958 at the Salon des Nouvelles Réalités, work "espacillimités" movement excited.

In 1965, Nadir Afonso definitely abandons the architecture; aware of its social maladjustment, takes refuge slowly in great isolation and accentuates the course of his life exclusively dedicated to the creation of his work.

In October 2015 will open in the Chaves Museum Contemporary Art Nadir Afonso, a project from architect Siza Vieira.
